Signs Your Ignition Cylinder or Switch Needs Attention
Ignition problems rarely appear without warning. The most common mechanical red flags include a key that takes unusual force to turn, a cylinder that spins all the way around without engaging the starter, a key that will not return to the off position after the engine starts, or a key that simply refuses to come out when you are done driving. Dewey Beach's coastal climate is particularly hard on these components — fine sand carried off the beach and salt humidity seep into the cylinder's pin stacks over time, causing the pins to corrode or bind. Worn wafers inside the cylinder eventually stop aligning with the key's cuts, which is why older keys sometimes work and new copies do not. On the switch side, symptoms tend to be electrical: accessories that fail to power up, a starter that clicks but does not crank, or a vehicle that loses all electrical function with the key in the run position.
If you notice any of these warning signs, the safest approach is to avoid forcing the key. Forcing a seized cylinder can shear the key inside the lock, turning a simple repair into a more involved extraction job. Call (704) 850-6756 and let a trained technician assess the situation before the problem escalates.
